Performing with the quintet in which he started out in 1970, the iconic Petty smiled lots and raised his arms with genuine gratitude as Mudcrutch performed to a sold-out Tabernacle in Atlanta, Ga., on June 2. 

While Petty assumed lead vocals on most songs, he deferred to his band mates on several ... the kind of merriment that comes from playing with longtime friends. 

Aside from a handful of covers, Mudcrutch played originals from its 2008 debut and recent sophomore album, "2."  No Petty hits on this night, and they weren't really missed. Not with Mudcrutch arrangements that created opportunities for backwoods picking to mingle with gospel harmonies, a bit of barroom blues and gifted instrumentalists adding textures without risk of losing hold of the pulse.
