Il Divo Ignites Chastain Park Amphitheatre

Pass the smelling salts, please. The multinational quartet, Il Divo, conjured a romance-novel fantasy of dashing suitors tearing their hearts off their sleeves, which made the ladies in the audience faint with ecstasy on Saturday, Sept. 2. 
 

Il Divo — the American tenor David Miller, the Spanish baritone Carlos Marin, the French pop singer Sebastien Izambard, and the Swiss tenor Urs Bühler — constitutes an astutely selected mixture of operatic and quasi-operatic voices, singing in several languages, which blend seamlessly while maintaining perfect pitch. Saturday's Atlanta performance was a beautiful feat of vocal coordination. 
 

"For me, singing a great song is like making love," the suave Spanish baritone,  Carlos Marin, explained  during one of four segments in which the individual singers introduced themselves and cracked jokes.  "You start softly," Marin stressed. "You never rush." 
 

 

The Best of Il Divo's repetoire stretched across a vast variety of styles and songs, going from balladic pop, to musical theatre, Latin/dance to classical. 
 

This quartet is known for their romantic sound and the tree-cover, tiered-levels and stonework at Chastain Park Amphitheater provided an intimate, cozy setting.  How lovely it was to sit  outdoors, listen to music, chat with a dear friend and sip wine in soft, fluttering candlelight.
